8 Etiquettes of Staying in a Mosque |
The mosque is the house of Allah Almighty. The first house built in the world is the mosque, which is established in Mecca and is known as the Kaaba. That is the Qibla of Muslims. All other mosques in the world are built in that direction.
Showing respect, maintaining, and observing etiquette towards the mosque is considered a religious duty. Here are some etiquette of the mosque:
Going to the mosque without bad smell:
Before going to the mosque, one should become pure and clean. It is not advisable to go to the mosque after eating any kind of bad-smelling food, such as raw onion, garlic, or smoking. This causes discomfort to others, and the angels are also bothered.
It was narrated from Abdullah ibn Umar (RA) that the Prophet (PBUH) said, “Whoever eats from these plants, i.e., raw onion, garlic, should not come near our mosque.” (Bukhari, Hadith: 815; Muslim, Hadith: 1282)
Entering the mosque with the right foot and leaving with the left foot:
One should enter the mosque with the right foot and leave with the left foot. It was narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) preferred the right foot as much as possible. Even when performing his purification, putting on his shoes, and combing his hair.
(An-Nasa'i, Hadith: 112)
Reciting Bismillah, Durood, and Dua:
When entering the mosque, first say ‘Bismillah’, then Durood, then Dua. The three can be said together like this: ‘Bismillahi was-salatu was-salamu ‘ala Rasulillahi Allahummaaf tahlil abwaba rahmatik.’ When leaving the mosque, first say Bismillah, then Durood, then Dua. The three can be said together like this: Bismillahi was-salatu was-salamu ala Rasulillahi Allahumma inni as-aluka min fadliq.
The issues have been clarified from several hadiths. (Muslim, Hadith: 1685; Tirmidhi, Hadith: 314; Ibn Majah, Hadith: 771).
Putting the right shoe on first after leaving:
Putting on the right shoe after leaving the mosque. (Narrated by An-Nasa'i, Hadith: 112)
In that case, if you leave the mosque with your left foot, put on the shoe, and put on the right shoe first, everything will be done properly.
Performing Tahiyyatul Masjid:
Performing two rak'ahs of prayer upon entering the mosque is called Tahiyyatul Masjid. This prayer should be performed whenever you get the opportunity after entering the mosque. It was narrated from Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: When one of you enters the mosque, he should perform two rak'ahs of prayer before sitting. (Muslim, Hadith: 1687; Tirmidhi, Hadith: 129)
Not to speak useless and worldly things:
The mosque is a place of worship. Therefore, one should worship there or sit quietly. One should not disturb the worship of others, engage in useless talk, or talk about worldly things. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “When one of you prays and sits in his place, the angels pray for his forgiveness and mercy until he becomes impure or gets up and leaves.” (Abu Dawud, Hadith: 469)
Not to announce lost things:
Announcing lost things in the mosque is also against the sanctity of the mosque. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever hears a person in the mosque announcing something lost, let him say: May Allah not return it to you. For the mosque was not built for that.” (Muslim, Hadith: 1288; Abu Dawud, Hadith: 473)
Not making a market:
It is not appropriate to do any activity in the mosque that is not in line with the aims and objectives of the mosque. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The following are the things that are not appropriate in the mosque: not making the mosque a passageway, not spreading weapons there, not moving the bow, not drawing arrows, not carrying raw meat, not applying the penalty of punishment, not avenging blood, and not making a market.” (Ibn Majah, Hadith: 748)
Finally, the mosque is the best and most beloved place to Allah. It is important to preserve the dignity and religious solemnity of this place by maintaining the etiquette of the mosque. May Allah grant everyone that success. Amen.
