Salam is Islamic greeting.

Salam is an excellent example of the Islamic greeting.

Salam is one of the important components of Islamic culture. Islam has instructed the widespread practice of exchanging salam among every Muslim. There are many instructions in this regard in various verses of the Quran and various hadiths. Today we will know the lexical meaning of Salam, an important component of Islamic culture, its rulings, the Masnun words of Salam, the Masnun words of Salam in response to Salam, and Islam's view on the use of greetings of cultures other than Salam, and the importance of exchanging Salam. The word 'Salam' is Arabic. In english, its lexical meaning stands for 'wishing for peace,' 'wishing for safety,' etc. The role of Salam in creating Islamic brotherhood: The role of Salam in creating Islamic brotherhood is immense. By exchanging salam, the brotherhood between Muslims becomes strong and solid. Even a Muslim can forget his enmity with another Muslim by exchanging greetings. In addition, the Quran commands to ask permission by giving greetings first. Allah Almighty says, “O you who believe, do not enter houses other than your own until you have asked permission and greeted their people. That is better for you, that you may remember.” (Surah An-Nur: 27). Allah Almighty says, “And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet with a better greeting than it, or return it.” (Surah An-Nisa: 86). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “A Muslim has six duties towards another Muslim: to visit him when he is sick, to visit him when he dies, to answer him when he calls, to greet him when he meets him, to answer him when he sneezes, and to seek goodness for him in his absence and in his presence.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

A Muslim has six duties towards another Muslim.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “A Muslim has six duties towards another Muslim: to greet him when he meets him, to answer him when he calls, to answer him when he sneezes, to visit him when he is sick, to attend his funeral when he dies, and to love for him what he loves.” (Bayhaqi, Shu’abul Iman)

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) also said, “You will not enter Paradise until you believe in Allaah and His Messenger.” And you will not believe until you love one another. And shall I not inform you of that which you will love one another when you do so? (That is) increase the greeting of peace among yourselves.’ (Bukhari, Muslim). The greeting of the people of Paradise among themselves will be peace. The people of Paradise will greet one another, and Allah and His angels will greet them. Allah says, ‘Their first words therein will be: Glory be to You, O Allah.’ And their greeting will be: peace. And their last words will be: ‘All praise is due to Allah.’ (Surah Yunus: 10). Allah also says, ‘Peace is from the Most Gracious Lord.’ (Surah Yasin: 58). Allah also says, ‘Peace be upon you. May you be well. Enter therein (Paradise) forever.’ (Surah Az-Zumar: 73). It is disliked to use other words instead of salam in greeting.

Who can greet whom: Muslims can greet each other. In this case, the Masnun rule is that a person traveling on a horse should greet a person walking, a person walking should greet a person sitting, a small number of people should greet a large number of people, a person should greet a caravan, and the young should greet the old. However, the old can also greet the young to teach them the salam. There are hadiths narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) about the elders giving the salam to the young for the purpose of teaching them the salam.

Who cannot greet the salam:

Who cannot greet the salam: It is haram to greet anyone other than a Muslim. Because the salam has been mentioned in the hadith only to spread it among Muslims. However, if a tyrant ruler of a different religion forces one to greet someone and if one fears that he will be oppressed by him if he does not greet him, it is permissible to greet him. It was permissible to greet the People of the Book in the past. However, since there are no genuine People of the Book today, it is not permissible to greet the Jews and Christians either. However, if one needs to greet a non-Muslim, one should greet him in this way: ‘Assalamu ala manittaba al-huda,’ meaning ‘Peace be upon the one who follows the path of guidance.’ And if a non-Muslim greets a Muslim, one should only reply with ‘Wa Alaikum.’

When is it disliked to greet.

When is it disliked to greet: Every Muslim should greet each other every time they meet, even if they meet again after hiding behind a wall. However, there are some times during the day and night when it is disliked to greet someone. These times are:

  1. One should not greet someone while they are praying. Because the person cannot answer it while in prayer. If he answers, the prayer will be invalid.
  2. One cannot greet someone while urinating or defecating. Because then there is no way to respond. Salam is also a type of dhikr. Dhikr cannot be done while urinating or defecating.
  3. One should not greet someone while in a state of ablution. This will destroy his concentration on ablution; mistakes may also be made in ablution.
  4. One should not greet someone while eating. It is forbidden to greet at this time in the Hadith.
  5. One should not greet someone while reciting the Quran.
  6. One should not greet someone while making dhikr or mukti.
  7. One should not greet someone while listening to sermons and advice.
  8. One should not greet someone while engaged in a religious education session.
  9. One should not greet the muezzin while he is calling for prayer.
  10. One should not greet someone while he is busy with some urgent accounting. Since responding to the greeting is obligatory, it is the basic etiquette of greeting to take the condition of the person being greeted into special consideration. Ruling on responding to the greeting: Although it is Sunnah to greet, it is obligatory to respond to it.
