7 Ways to Be Patient in Times of Trouble: This article will calm you down, God willing.

(1) Having complete faith in destiny:

Allah the Almighty says, “No calamity befalls the earth or among yourselves but that We have recorded it in a Book before it happens—that is easy for Allah—so that you may not grieve over what has gone away from you and rejoice over what He has given you. And Allah does not like the arrogant and proud.” [Surah Hadid, Verses: 22-23]

(2) Realizing the reality of worldly life:

If someone knows the reality of worldly life, it becomes easy for him to be patient in times of trouble.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “The world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the disbeliever.” [Imam Muslim, As-Sahih: 7307]

Imam Ibn Rajab Hanbali (may Allah have mercy on him) said, "Since the world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the disbeliever, the inmate of the prison will not be free from hardship until he comes out of it. When he comes out of this prison, he will be blessed with the fulfillment of his hopes and desires and the eternal blessings of Paradise." [Mazmur Rasail: 1/223]

The renowned Tabi’i Sufyan As-Thawri (may Allah have mercy on him) said, ‘Whoever is given something in this world, he is also told to accept a similar hardship.’ (i.e., be prepared for a similar hardship) [Imam Abu Nu’aym, Hilyatul Awliya: 7/21]

(3) Seeking patience through various supplications:

Patience is undoubtedly a difficult task. Allah has told us how to supplicate so that we can be patient.

رَبَّنَا أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا وَتَوَفَّنَا مُسْلِمِين

Meaning: Our Lord! Open for us the door of patience and let us die as Muslims. [Surah A’raf, verse: 126]

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) supplicated thus—

اَللّٰهُمَّ أَسْأَلُكَ الرِّضَا بَعْدَ الْقَضَاءِ

(Allaahumma as-‘aluqaar ridaa badal qadaa)

O Allah! I ask You (for forgiveness) so that I may be pleased with Your decision. [Imam an-Nasa’i, as-Sunan: 1305; the hadeeth is saheeh]

(4) Knowing the dignity and benefits of patience:

In the Holy Qur’aan, Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And surely We will test you with something of fear and hunger, loss of wealth and lives, and loss of fruits and vegetables. But give good news to the patient; when a calamity strikes them, they say, ‘Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return.’” For them is forgiveness from their Lord and mercy, and they are the ones who are guided.’” [Surah Al-Baqarah, verses: 155-157]

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “O Abu Bakr, may Allah forgive you. Do you not get sick? Do you not suffer? Do you not grieve? Does calamity not afflict you?” Abu Bakr said, “Of course.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “These are your expiations.” [Imam Ahmad, Al-Musnad: 70; the hadith is sahih]

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “If Allah has destined a servant for a rank that he is not capable of attaining through his deeds, then He tests him with a calamity in his body or his wealth or his children and gives him the ability to bear it patiently. Finally, He brings him to that appointed position. [Imam Abu Dawud, As-Sunan: 3090; The hadith is sahih.]

It was narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘When Allah intends good for His servant, He hastens to punish him in this world. And when Allah intends evil for His servant, He refrains from punishing him. Finally, He will punish him completely on the Day of Resurrection. [Imam Tirmidhi, As-Sunan: 2396; The hadith is sahih.]

(5) Realizing the reality and importance of patience:

Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: ‘If you are patient (in adversity), the decree will be effective for you, and you will attain righteousness. On the other hand, if you are not patient, destiny will still be effective against you, and you will be a sinner.’ [Imam Mawardi, Adabud Dunya wad Din, page: 407]

It is narrated in the hadith that when Allah loves a people, He tests them (with calamities). Those who are pleased with it are pleased with it, and those who are displeased with it are displeased with it. [Imam Ibn Majah, As-Sunan: 4031; The hadith is hasan.]

(6) At least try to be patient:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Whoever is patient, Allah will grant him the ability to be patient.” [Imam Bukhari, as-Sahih: 1469]

(7) Seeking comfort from seeing those who are in greater distress:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Look at those who are lower than you and do not look at those who are higher than you. That is the best way not to belittle the blessings of Allah.” [Imam Muslim, as-Sahih: 7320]

In another hadith, he said, “If one of you looks at someone who has been given superiority in wealth and physical appearance, then he should look at someone who is lower than him.” [Imam Bukhari, As-Sahih: 6490]

No matter how much trouble we may be in, if we look around us, we will see people who are in worse trouble than us. Let us thank Allah that He has kept us better than many.
