Islam places great importance on honesty, morality, and a blameless life. Honesty is considered an important element of success and peace not only in personal life but also in social and state life. The importance of honesty, its value, and the rewards for it are clearly mentioned in the Quran and Hadith. This column will discuss the rewards of honesty from an Islamic perspective.

The Importance of Honesty.

1. The Importance of Honesty In the Quran and Hadith, honesty is a fundamental moral quality, which is highly praised in Islam. In this regard, Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran, ‘And indeed, if you are truthful, Allah will make a way out for you and improve your condition.’ (Surah At-Tahrim: 2).

This verse shows that honesty is part of faith and that Allah bestows various blessings on His servants.

In the Quran, Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, has given importance to honesty and has promised to receive multiple rewards through honesty. As mentioned in the Hadith, The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Honesty leads a man to justice and a just man to Paradise.” (Sahih Muslim: 2642). Through this Hadith, we learn that honesty is a quality that helps one gain the trust of others, and one day it paves the way for reaching Paradise.

Rewards for Honesty.

2. Rewards for Honesty: Islam has mentioned many rewards for honesty, which are not only available in this world but also in the Hereafter. Some examples of the rewards of honesty are given:

Respect in this world.

a) Peace, support, and respect in this world. The Quran and Hadith have mentioned that people who achieve honesty will receive peace and respect in this world. Honesty acts as a special mercy from Allah. In many cases, speaking the truth earns a person’s trust and makes his life easier. Moreover, honesty helps a person increase his respect and status. As mentioned in the Hadith, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘Whoever is truthful, Allah will grant him success in his religion.’ (Tabarani, Hadith No. 7541).

Gaining Paradise.

b) Gaining Paradise: Since Paradise is the ultimate goal of a believer in Islam, the reward for honesty is significant. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘Whoever is truthful with faith, he will enter Paradise.’ (Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 6403). This Hadith states that a believer will enter Paradise because of honesty, because honesty is part of faith, and it is a way to gain Allah’s pleasure.

Gaining Allah’s pleasure.

c) Gaining Allah’s pleasure: Honesty is the way to gain Allah’s pleasure. As Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran, ‘Speak the truth, and Allah will guide you to the straight path.’ (Surah Ahzab: 75). This verse indicates that when a person practices honesty, Allah rewards him with His mercy and grace, which brings peace to his heart and success in life.

Prayer and Forgiveness.

d) Prayer and Forgiveness: The fact that honesty can be a means of accepting prayers from Allah and receiving forgiveness has been mentioned in many hadiths. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Ask Allah for forgiveness; He will accept your prayers and your mercy.” (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 6874). Thus, honesty paves the way for a person to pray to Allah correctly and receive forgiveness, which becomes a great reward in his afterlife. This proves that honesty not only creates a kind of moral status in a person’s life but also gives him success in religion and a bright place in society.

Examples of honesty.

3. Examples of honesty: There are many examples of honesty in the history of Islam. The most famous and excellent example of this is the life of the beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet was ‘Al-Amin’ (Trustworthy), which is proof of his honesty. Even when he rose up in Mecca to preach Islam, the infidels of Mecca believed in him because of his honesty. Another Example is the companion Abu Bakr {May allah be pleased with him}. He stood for truth in every difficult situation, and his life as the first Caliph of Islam was a living example of honesty. It was because of his honesty that Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was given the title of Siddiq.

The importance of honesty in Islam is immense, and it is not just a moral virtue, but it is considered a fundamental teaching of Islam. The Quran and Hadith mention numerous rewards for honesty, which bring good fortune to a believer in both this world and the Hereafter. Truth and honesty are the main ingredients of human spiritual progress and social peace. Therefore, following honesty is an obligatory virtue for a Muslim, which will lead him to the pleasure of Allah and Paradise. Therefore, we should all lead our worldly lives by maintaining honesty in all aspects of life.
